Bare AAAC Bare Conductor Cable Build Stronger Grids with All Aluminum Alloy Conductors

All aluminum alloy stranded wire (AAAC) refers to a stranded wire product in which all strands are composed of aluminum alloy wire, and belongs to the type of wire used in the field of power transmission and distribution. This product is mainly used in scenarios such as overhead power lines, with voltage levels covering high voltage or ultra-high voltage transmission fields of 110kV and above [3]. Its aluminum alloy material is composed of silicon (0.50%~0.60%), magnesium (0.65%~0.75%), aluminum (98-99%) and other components, achieving a balance between high strength and high conductivity through optimized element ratios. The product structure includes single-layer and multi-layer types, and the stress corrosion resistance can be enhanced by adjusting the mass percentage of aluminum magnesium silicon.

 

Service Performance

(1).The permissible long-time operating temperature for aerial conductor is 70oC.

(2).Under the circumstance that rare climate is occuring and ice coverage rate low in heavy ice area,the biggest stress of cable at the lowest point of the sag should not exceed 60% of the short-time destructive power.

(3).When connecting conductors,the conductor beside the connecting tube cant be prominent.Otherwise,the force on the operating conductors will be unbalanced.After connectors are install,the connecting tube should be painted by moisture-proof varnish in order to protect it from corrosion.

(4).Under installaion,the arc downing stress of all the conduct ors should be the same.With in the permissible distance of crossing buildings or dropping to the ground,the stress can be 10-15% higher than regular stress.

 

 

The main classifications of bare conductor are AAC (All aluminum conductor), AAAC (All aluminum Alloy Conductor) or ACSR (aluminum conductor steel reinforced). AAC is most commonly found in urban areas with frequent supports and short spans. It is also used in coastal regions where salt in the air can cause corrosion - the all aluminum wire providing corrosion resistance - and specified for use in the railway industry for OHL electrification. AAAC tend to be specified where greater mechanical resistance is required and where there is a reduced sag characteristic. The ACSR, with its steel reinforcement provides additional strength and where the spans run for larger distances, such as across rivers.

Applications:

  • Coastal and highly corrosive areas: have become the preferred or standard configuration for new transmission lines in these areas.
  • Urban power grid and distribution lines: Due to their light weight, compact structure, aesthetic appearance (without steel core corrosion pollution), and minimal impact on electrolytic corrosion of surrounding metal facilities, they are increasingly used in overhead lines that are difficult to access in cities.
  • Forest fire zone: The temperature of the arc bead generated by aluminum alloy wires during short circuit is relatively low, and it is not easy to ignite vegetation, which has certain fire safety advantages.

Key Characteristics:

1. Structure:Homogeneous. Strands made entirely of aluminium alloy. No steel core.

2. Weight: Aluminium alloy is less dense than steel. The absence of a heavy steel core reduces overall weight.

3. Mechanical Strength: The aluminium alloy itself provides substantial tensile strength, sufficient for most line designs.

4. Conductivity: Slightly lower than pure aluminium (~52-60% IACS, depending on alloy). Conductivity is uniform across the cross-section.

5. Corrosion Resistance: Excellent. Entire conductor is made of corrosion-resistant alloy. No risk of bimetallic (galvanic) corrosion between steel and aluminium.

6. Sag-Tension Behavior: Higher thermal sag. Has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Under high electrical load (high temperature), sag increase is more significant than for ACSR.
